Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Plans – What’s the Difference

Understanding Medicare Supplements & Medicare Advantage

Medicare does not cover all your healthcare costs. In fact, Medicare Part A and Part B only cover about 80% of medical expenses.

Medicare Supplement plans, also called “Medigap” plans, supplement your basic Medicare coverage. If you choose one of these plans, you still have your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage plus additional insurance to pay part – or all – of what Medicare does not cover.

Medicare Advantage plans completely replace your Part A and Part B Medicare insurance, and provide additional insurance to pay some of what Medicare does not cover. You no longer use your Medicare card. Instead, you’re covered by the Medicare Advantage plan for all your healthcare needs. With Medicare Advantage plans, you are usually responsible for a copayment when you access care. These plans often have lower monthly premiums.
